The Blades’ first single was released on Energy Records in the summer of 1980.
The A side, Hot For You, is a singalong pop punk masterpiece. It was recorded by the original Blades line up (1977 – 81): Paul Cleary on vocals and bass, his brother Lar on Guitar and Pat Larkin on drums. Interestingly, at Ramport Studios in Battersea.
So, come outside baby
now the time is right
with your brand new shades and your jeans so tight,
well the sun is burning and I’m getting hot for you…
The B-Side, Reunion, is a simple, fast paced tune with Paul Cleary’s typical lyrical genius.
I talk to her sister whenever I can
trying to make a connection
I used to write letters but threw them away
‘Cause I’m afraid of rejection.
This will be hopefully be the first of a series of pieces on classic Dublin punk and new wave singles.

On several occasions, when I direct history nerds like ourselves to this site, they’ve gone “Oh! The Blades!”
I do not get it.
Fantastic band I’m still exploring, Revelations is one of the most played tunes on my Mp3 player and I’m guilty for being too lazy to dig much further myself.
The Blades were one of the best Irish bands EVER. Still difficult to find a band out of Ireland as good as them. More a Mod type post punk band. I guess New Wave covers it fairly well. But they had many, many excellent songs. Revelations is a great song, it really is but I don’t even think it’s make my top 10 Blades tracks.
Downmarket, Ghost of a Chance, Pride, Those were the days, Last man in Europe, Hot for you, The reunion, Boy one, Don’t break the silence……so many truly great songs

These are great. I’m really enjoying this time period of music. Thanks for sharing!
Cheers for the good work and great to see so many comments from folks like me who dug/dig The Blades. All of my friends failed to see their magic, which is a pity as I thought they were better than The Style Council and at least as good as The Truth!
