So ‘Sir’ David ‘Ram Jam’ Rodigan, legendary British reggae DJ, told the packed crowd in Twisted Pepper last night halfway through his amazing 2.5hr set.

Definitely one of the best gigs I’ve been to in Dublin. Everyone should see this guy in action at least once in their lives.

Exhibition, 09 November – 15 November 2011:

The Little Green Street Gallery, Dublin 1

Sound System: The Hidden History: The story of the sound system is one of technological innovation, creative enterprise and musical genius, but it is also a story of deep spiritual and cultural significance. From its first incarnation in 1950s Jamaica, the sound system was the radio of the people. Through artists and producers from Prince Buster to King Tubby and Augustus Pablo, the music expressed the aspirations, sufferings and joys of everyday life. The exhibition follows the growth of sound system culture from Kingston across Jamaica, to the UK and then to Europe, spreading the sounds of ska, rocksteady, reggae and dub and planting the seeds of a new generation of singers, musicians, DJs, producers and dancers.

Exhibition in Berlin

Exhibition: The text is written by Ronan Lynch, an historian of music who has written widely about reggae, politics and culture. He is editor and publisher of Irie Up magazine. The show is designed by Paula Strzelecka, who is a graphic designer and photo editor of Irie Up magazine. The artwork for the show is produced by Michael Thompson and Mau Mau. Thompson, also known as Freestylee, is a designer and graphic artist from Jamaica who specializes in political and revolutionary themes. He lives in the USA. Mau Mau is the English artist whose graphic works adorn many lanes and walls in Kingston, Jamaica, Berlin and other reggae hotspots around the world.

Evening Programme: There are several evening events planned to run alongside the exhibition. The official opening party is 6.30 on Wednesday night, 9th November. On Thursday night, at 7pm, we will be showing the Irish premiere of the film ‘Holding On To Jah’. On Friday night, Irieland Sound and guests will nice up the area from 8pm and the Dublin Reggae Crews will be on the decks on Saturday night, also from 8pm. There will be a second screening of the film at 2pm on Saturday afternoon.

Pricks And Mortar

It’s great to see ADW has another exhibition of stencil art on the way. I’ve been following his progression and his contribution to the decorating of boring Dublin walls for some time now, and even have his ‘tribute’ to a certain Mr. Ahern framed upstairs.

This show will run only for three days, and as well as stenciled artwork it will feature 3D pieces and installations looking at Ireland post Tiger. All details in the poster above.

Those were the days, my friends.

Culture before debauchery

I’m looking forward to checking out the launch of the ‘This Space’ Open Exhibition tonight at the The Little Green Street Gallery, just off Capel Street.

As the Facebook event says:

Little green street gallery will be opening its doors this Friday september the 9th at 7pm for everyone to have a little taste of what the irish art scene has to offer. We have received so many inspiring submissions from various established and emerging artists across ireland and were proud to offer our walls to these people.

If you can’t make it down today, the exhibition itself will be running till September 14th with the gallery being open from 10-6 Monday – Friday and 12-3 on Saturday. I’ll let you know what’s it like anyway. 😉

It’s Phizzfest time.

Phizzfest, one of my favourite community festivals, is just around the corner. Last year we were on hand to assist with the History Ireland Hedge School on Dublin’s punk and new wave scenes, and this year I’ve intentions of popping along to some events too.

Here are some highlights from the 2010 events:

Some events of note for 2011 are below.

In the mid-90s, half the interesting bands in Dublin seemed to live in Phibsborough. In the summer of 1997 they descended on The Hut every Saturday night, in various states of repair, to sing songs.

People always seem to be complain there’s not a lot of things you can do in Dublin on the cheap.

Well, the good people at The Central Library are organising four free Thursday lunchtime talks over the next month on the topic of Crime and Drugs in Dublin City.

The city of exploding statues.

The image above is the view from the top of Nelson’s Pillar, and what a view it was.

I’ll be on Newstalk today at 3pm, as I was a fortnight ago, to fill in for the history slot normally covered by Tommy Graham of History Ireland on Sean Moncrieff’s radio programme. Last time I was on I discussed the Animal Gangs of the 1930s, and today I’ll be looking at our city of exploding statues.

It’s an area I’m meaning to write about for the site, and no doubt I will down the line. How many Dubliners know for example that as well as Nelson and King William of Orange, Daniel O’Connell and Wolfe Tone also found their monuments attacked in the city? Statue politics of course has dragged into the 21st century, with debates like those around the statue of Sean Russell, a leading Irish republican figure regarded by some as a fascist collaborator.

It’s a brief and accessible slot, looking at what I think is an unusual bit of history. Hopefully some of you will tune in.

Better than a meaningless pre-season friendly this one, with Everton’s season opener against Spurs on Saturday having been cancelled due to the ruckus on the mainland. The Toffees have intimated that they will be fielding a strong side against Bohemians, everyone else in the Premier League having the benefit of their first round of fixtures on Saturday.

The Gypsies Vs. The Toffees...

Tickets are €15 for adults, €10 for members and €7 for Under-12s.

They will be available from the Bohemians office on Monday from 9am to 3pm. Any remaining tickets will be available on the turnstiles on the night.
