Thanks to Rashers for uploading another gem.
Eamonn Mac Thomais takes you around by Dublin Port, City Quay Church, Spencer Dock and St. Laurence O’Toole’s school in Seville Place (where Joe Clarke who fought in the Battle of Mount Street Bridge was educated).
Could you tell me if the rest of programme in the Mac Thomais’s TV series is available anywhere on line?
So sad to see the neglect of Spencer dock but suppose its all built up now. My memories include that of the coal ship the Saint Mungo breaking the ice in the dock , after coming through the lifting bridge,to unload her cargo of coal. I also recall the delightful Bridge Master, complete with bowler hat, who took great pleasure, as the bridge was coming down, to march from one side to the other at a measured rate calculated to ensure that the bridge missed hitting him by approximately six inches. Another memory is that of the Munster and Leinster, the B and I ships, and how we knew they were preparing to leave when we saw the rowing boat take their hauling off lines to the south bank of the Liffey. No thrusters in those days.
