I was very intrigued to read in Paul Clerkin’s Dublin Street Names (2001) that Liberty Lane off Lower Kevin Street used to once extend all the way to the canal at Portobello. Clerkin suggests that “this route can still be traced, although a warehouse now disrupts it and various sections have been assigned new names”.
Using Google Maps, I’ve tried to trace this line.
What do you think?
That’s interesting. As an ex-courier and an ex-culchie who’s been living in Dublin for longer than I’ve spent in my rural homelands, I’m very interested in the geography, history, and social and cultural heritage of Dublin. I love seeing old maps and comparing different routes and locations with their modern equivalents.
Does that book give the reasons behind placenames? e.g. I work near Prussia St in Dublin 7 and I’ve often thought it’s an unusual name seeing as it doesn’t even point in the direction of Prussia. I presume it was named at a time when Prussia was an ally with Britain against Revolutionary or Bonapartist France.
So do I! If I had the time, I’d tried to seek out some old Dublin maps and try to piece together the modern route of Liberty Lane.
Yep, it has information on most of the major Dublin street names. The entry to Prussia Street is quite short:
“Named after Frederick the Great of Prussia in 1765. It was previously known as Cabragh Lane”
My Great Grandfathers family lived in 13 Liberty Lane (Now “The Village” Music Venue) as of the 1911 census but they may have been there a few generations prior also! John Davis was there until he died in 1839 and is buried in the park beside it! I’m trying to find out more and would love any further information about the Lane and family!
