What links this familiar ghost sign and my favourite street name in Dublin?
Lemons.
Or to be more precise, the Lemon family.
They were the proprietors of the above ‘The Confectioner’s Hall’, a beloved sweet shop for generations of Dubliners. Opening on that very spot in 1842, it only closed its doors in 1984. More on this history of the company can be read here, an excellent article on the Irish Architecture Forum blog by Lisa Cassidy.
One of my favourite street name in Dublin is Lemon Street, which is just off Grafton Street. It was named after Graham Lemon and his family who owned property in the area. (It certainly has a better ring to it than its previous name – Little Grafton Street).
So, what’s your favourite street name in Dublin?
The romantic in me just has to say ‘Love Lane’, off Lower Mount street.
My favourite street names in Dublin are a collection of streets, just round the corner from my house on the North Circular road, which I call Little Kerry.
Theres Glengarriff parade, muckross parade,Derrynane parade, Killarney parade….the use of these Kingdom namesakes always leaves me pondering to the history behind them.
I quite like Little Britain Street. Right next to Cuckoo Lane!
Georges Pocket Where I grew up
(Nee) O’Connor
(Thanks! I wish it hadn’t lost its formatting, the Ulysses quote is confusing lost in the middle of it.)
Ditto on Lemon Street, and I can’t help but love Of Lane, of Henry (Street) Moore (Street) Earl (Street) Of (Lane) Drogheda (Street) fame, because it’s ridiculous and childish and great.
Hi Lisa
My name is Maisy Fox. I’m looking for some information or a link to find out about the Lemons Sweet Shop from 1916.
Its for my school project. I seen your link and my dad asked me to see if you had any more information that could help me.
Thanks
Maisy Fox
My favourite is Tangier Lane. Such an incongruously evocative name for a skip-filled recess in Grafton St. round the back of the Gaiety.
Always liked Morning Star Avenue.
Gulistan Terrace. I assume there wasn’t a Little Persia nestled in between Ranelagh and Rathmines at any stage.
