Surely there is one of these hiding in every house in Ireland, the excellent 1965 Civil Defence ‘Survival in a Nuclear War’ booklet? The page above is particularly silly and worthy of posting, but it doesn’t get much more sensible elsewhere.

Boy – does this EVER bring it back!
I remember this booklet well. But there was really nowhere under the stairs to hide in our house – just a tiny cubby-hole with the gas-meter in it.
And trying to figure out how long a full bath would provide drinking water for 2 adults and 6 kids.
When my Mother was a Leader in the Civil Defence Casualty Section and had all the nuclear fallout notes in a binder at home – fascinating reading.
Talk abut naive! But we survived Chernobyl – a single incident – what if it were a couple of tactical nukes on Sellafield? Perhaps not so comfortable……
