I hadn’t!
A tip of the hat to CHTM regular commenter Oisin, who presumed I’d seen it somewhere down the line. How bizarre. If you didn’t cop straight away, this is beside The Auld Dubliner and Oliver St.John Gogarty pubs.

We badly need redeeming features for the abomination that is Temple Bar. This could be one of them.
If you want to bring another abomination to heel you might contact Newstalk and get them to withdraw the ad that describes the pub as The Oliver SAINT John Gogarty. I have had no success with my lone campaign directed at both the owners and Newstalk.
Reclaim the Bar? 😉
^ It’s a two man crusade then my friend, as I hate the SAINT John radio campaign!
@polo
although I agree with you, they may actually be right in calling him (or it) the Saint John Gogarty. “St.John Gogarty” pronounced “sinjun” comes from Norman French and of course means Saint John…..but of course it sounds naff and educated, we know that (chortle chortle). Reminds me of the eejits where I lived in Greystones calling St Vincent Road “st. vincent’s road”. you’ll find loads of similar examples if you look around…
from Wikipedia (and no, I’m not saying that Wikipedia is always correct)………..
“Believe those who ARE SEEKING the truth. Doubt those who find it.”
André Paul Guillaume Gide (22 November 1869 – 19 February 1951) was a French author and winner of the Nobel Prize in literature in 1947. Gide’s career ranged from its beginnings in the symbolist movement, to the advent of anticolonialism between the two World Wars.
did you ever see the plaque on OConnell Bridge about a make-it-y-up story ?
The Father Pat Noise Plaque? I’ll post up a decent picture of it over the weekend as a riposte to this piece, as I can only imagine that the “Believe those…” plaque is a bit of a DIY job- notice the screws aren’t the same and the dodgy concreting… I wonder how many other plaques came to be by guerilla historians?
if i’d the time, money and youthful enthusiaism I’d attach a plaque to Victoria Road (and anything else that includes her name) along the lines of Bothar Banriona Gorta Mor !!!
call the spade the spade as it is
The pub name refers to a specific character. His name is pronounced sinjun. End of story.
He played for Bohs you know! The poster GH on the bohs forum has done a huge amount of research on him if any of you who are registered there are interested.
Sadly this plaque has since been removed. I passed by the other day and it’s just a hole in the cobbles now.
