Two blasts from the past here.
M.Garnett & Son was a well-known gun shop on Parliament Street. Millard Bros was located on Ormond Quay, not far from Watt’s gunsmiths.
I think I recollect Hely’s of Dame St. also doing guns and ammunition. I swapped a camera for a small prisol that fired only blanks when I was au pairing in France.
I think when I went into Hely’s to stock up on blanks I was surprised to find I needed a licence.
I subsequently lost the pistol in the physics theatre in UCD.
If anyone out there has it I’d appreciate it back.
You have given me a clue, I am trying to trace the address of Hely’s limited of Dublin. This would be in the 1960 period. I owna lovely old webley shotgun with “Hely’s limited dublin” engraved on the rib. From your comments it appears that Hely’s was a fishing ackle shop that also sold guns?
The ultimate would be the history of Helys with a picture of the shop.
Here’s an ad for Hely’s from 1949, looks like it was at 26-29 Dame Street

Have a racquet with wooden frame, says Helys limited, 26- 28 dame Street.
Not sure if the above picture will show. It is to be seen here

It’s an extract from this Google Book.

In spite of what I said above about the bullets, I do have fond memories of Hely’s. They put a fada in my Olivetti Lettera 44 typewriter back in the 1960s. The way they did it was ingenious. They replaced the tip of one of the (redundant) keys with an upper and lower case fada. They then disconnected that key from the carriage mechanism so that when you typed that key the carriage didn’t move. You then typed the fada before the letter and bingo. Pure genius.

I still have the typewriter and though I never use it now would not part with it. It was a friend.
.[Any chance, lads, that ye could incorporate a preview function in the comments??]
