Finally a bit of good news for the city. Business groups, traders and locals are coming together with the idea of turning East Parnell Street, which runs from the top of O’Connell Street to Gardiner Street, into Dublin’s Oriental Quarter.
The Dublin Civic Trust will publish a study on Parnell Street next month which is the third in its series — the first two being on Capel Street and Thomas Street.
Widened footpaths, redesigned shop fronts, outdoor seating for restaurants, and more street lighting are all being recommended for the new eating quarter. – Herald
Best of luck to all involved.

To think that my great-grandmother is going to have lived in Chinatown. Wow 🙂
Where will the new Muslim ghetto be located? The Nigerian quarter? Will there be any Dubliners left in 20 years? Will all the butchers be halal?
“Will there be any Dubliners left in 20 years?”
Ah yeah, reckon there will still be a few knocking around in 2031.
If you go by the halal shops, I’d say a lot of the Muslims are down in Little Jerusalem.
It’s going to be the fourth, Dawson Street has also been covered by the Civic Trust.
“Will there be any Dubliners left in 20 years?”
Yeah, in Kilburn.
“It’s going to be the fourth, Dawson Street has also been covered by the Civic Trust.”
Apologies, The Herald is to blame for that inaccuracy.
“Will there be any Dubliners left in 20 years?”
Oddly enough I can’t remember being hassled by an Asian or an African, or in fact anyone else other than a Dubliner in that area. With any luck no, there won’t be!
Beef noodle soup in Charming Noodle ftw
Yeah and then to cover the cost of renovations, they hike up the rents so that the small business owners can’t stay there. I dunno – not entirely in favour of that, I love Parnell St the way it is – especially the Shakespeare. I’d hate to see that street becoming commercialised.
Great idea, hope it actually happens and isnt a repeat of smithfield
