Heading into town today I came across this sight outside the American embassy on Ballsbridge. Dozens and dozens of young adults queuing up for their Visa interview. Depressing.
I don’t think there’s anyone out there who doesn’t know someone close who has moved away or is planning on doing so too. Over the weekend, I went to two going away drinks of close friends of mine. Both were leaving for the summer at lack of job opportunities in the city. One to Berlin, the other to South America.
Any particular reason for it being like that today or is it always that long?
Apparently it’s students queuing up for their J1 interviews.
Happens every year around this time, it’s just J1 students fucking off for a summer on the lash. I was in a queue longer than that back in May 2005, long before the recession. And I don’t see how galavanting around south america for a few months is any great hardship.
well there were an awful lot of middle-aged ‘students’ there yesterday if that’s the case
No, I’d say that the queue is mostly J1ers, given that a bunch of my friends have been up there recently for that very reason. It might be more interesting to go back in the Autumn and see how many are standing outside it then. I wouldn’t be surprised if the queue was still lengthier than usual.
Brain drain… hmmmmm. Build a wall?
“Happens every year around this time, it’s just J1 students fucking off for a summer on the lash.”
Have to agree.
Couldn’t afford a J1 during the Tiger and can’t afford one now, good to see from the queue’s outside the American embassy and Copper Face Jacks indicate some people still can.
Thousands Are Sailing, but their pockets are full of their parents dosh and they’ll be back in a few months!
They’d never let me in to America on a J1 anyway, the big lefty head on me.
Ah you’d be fine, going on a J1 in about 3 weeks, with a comparable lefty head on me as yours (though defo less well known!). Considering a certain AFlood did a publicised speaking tour, it’d be grand.
And some of us do pay for our J1’s……

How dramatic are you being right now? Do you happen to write for the Daily Mail?
Anyone would realise that the queue is that length because it’s summer where thousands of Irish students head off on the J1.
Nah, got fired from the Mail last year.
“Anyone would realise that the queue is that length because it’s summer where thousands of Irish students head off on the J1.”
Well, I didn’t realise that. What an outrage. How dramatic.
