Shocking news breaking tonight that the James Connolly statue opposite Liberty Hall has been badly damaged by vandals.
From (our friends over at) 1916 Rebellion Walking Tour:
Someone sawed off the top half of the James Connolly memorial. Specifically three stars and a bit of the plough. Looks like a “professional” job as you can see from the picture I took today. If anyone knows anything or saw anything over the weekend get in touch before it’s melted for scrap. Please pass this on. Lorcan

The artist, Eamonn O’Doherty, who was responsible for the James Connolly Memorial, died just over two months ago.
fucking hell, that’s apalling
This is a disgrace and a tragedy.
It is alarming to see this trend hitting the city centre. Up to now it has been confined to statues which are in out of the way places.
You’d imagine the Garda would have some ideas, as this has been going on around the country for the last few years, where whole statues have been stolen.
If it’s not nipped in the bud in the city we are in trouble. There are many fine sculptures around the town.
the symbolism, could it be work of a new ultra right little gang in dublin? destroying the plough and stars, the symbol of connollys social struggle for a fair and just world for all???
And just as things finally kick off at #occupydamestreet
Yeah there has been a recent spate of these incidents on motorway art and public statures around the country but I’m surprised that someone had the time (and the balls) to get away with this in the city centre.
The nazis/rightwingers did it in revenge for the attack on the Sean Russell statue?

Very disappointing. Was this for a few bob on the bronze? Says it all about the degree of alienation for some. Hope it will be fully restored.
