There is confusion over the official list of ICA members and supporters who were killed in action in the Easter Rising. Some erroneously name The O’Rahilly (Irish Volunteers) and Daniel Murray (A Company, 3rd Battalion, Dublin Brigade, Irish Volunteers) as ICA members. Other lists omit John O’Reilly (second-in-command to Sean Connolly at City Hall) while most exclude James Corcoran and Arthur ‘Neal’ Wicks. (The latter of whom I have been researching for some time and hope to publish my work on early next year. I think he was an actual member of the ICA and will argue this in my essay).
After comparing several sources including Ray Bateson’s excellent They Died By Pearse’s Side (2010) and R. M. Fox’s The History of the Irish Citizen Army (1943), I think I’ve come up with a definite list.
Fifteen ICA members were killed in action while Michael Mallin (8 May) and James Connolly (12 May) were executed afterwards.

Allowing for a discrepancy in dates I wonder is this James Fox (James Joseph Fox)?
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Dublin/Clondalkin/Clondalkin/1283011/
If he died at the age of c16, he should of been 10 or 11 at the 1911 census. His father was named Pat (Patrick). Apparently he lived at some point at 74 Thomas St. but was born in Drumree Co. Meath. Can’t seem to find him on the census.
He was 16 yrs old when he was killed at St Stephens green his father was Patrick James fox formerly of the spencer arms knockmark Drumree Co Meath the family is listed on the 1911 census as we have a copy of this James was born 1900 and at the time of his death had a brother and sister hope this information helps
People lied about their age especially in the census in order to qualify for the pension sooner. On top of that people often didn’t know what exact year they were born in. Checks of grave records, baptismal records and census records often throw up three different answers as to the year of birth for the same person.
Fascinating. The ICA is well overdue a new history. The last one was R. M. Fox in the 1940s, wasn’t it? There must be a wealth of new material out there.
For instance I was only vaguely aware until recently of the reorganisation and growth of the ICA following the 1921 Truce and the signing of the Treaty and it’s role in the Battle of Dublin at the start of the Civil War.
FYI:
Brian Hanley, ‘The Irish Citizen Army after 1916’, pp. 37-47. Saothar 28, 2008.
Ages given in the two online Censuses (Censii?) can be very dodgy: my great-grandparents on my da’s side managed to be 33 and 32 in 1901, but 46 and 45 in the 1911 one. No other history of time-travel in our family that I’m aware of!
On the post-Rising ICA, Peadar O’Donnell tried getting a company off the ground in Derry during the War of Independence, but later switched to the IRA.
John Adams was 78, Charles Darcy 15 according to the dates given.
thanks — first time I knew of four dying at City Hall; the NGA plaque lists only two, the commanding officer and second-in-command.
In one account I read a long time ago and which I have not been able to find since, one female ICA was described as mortally wounded. An error?

Hi Noel -John (Jack) Reilly from Skryne was my great Uncle -2nd Battalion. I have an obituary from paper printed by Skryne GAC but not much other info really. So no idea re his involvement. His dad Patrick lived in Dublin & was involved at Fairview & GPO (2nd battalion Dublin) -he was born in Skryne. His file only released in Dec 2015. Can provide some general background info but no personal account on his file as he died 1923 of natural causes. Any resources for us to check?
Regards
Christine

hi pete
like you i was fed up of finding everything about the padrig pearse etc of the 1916 rising but recently i happened upon a great book of photographs by liz gillis. revolution in dublin (a photographic history 1913-23). Its €15.99 so look it up online first. my grandfather and his brother were two of the volunteers in dublin and this was the only book i found their photos in. look up (a) mercier archives and (b) kilmainham gaol archives also. a will give you and idea of what is in the book. best of luck
carosh
What about Peadar Macken? Super-important figure.
Military archives .ie is another site if your relatives too part in 1916. Their files will be online even with limited data on them as long as you know their name and where they were living at the time and approx age you should be able to find them
The “ICA roll of honour” above lists only 14 and I suspect that is incomplete. Also three are listed as killed at the “GPO” but it might be that was their garrison unit rather than that they were killed in the GPO. I have heard that a number died in and around Moore St, where the GPO garrison (minus all but two (three?) of the women, having been asked to leave earlier) spent their last evening and day of freedom.
James Fox I was told is a relation to my Great Grandmother. Marian Kiernan (Marmion) He is buried in Knockmark Cemetery Drumlee, Co. Meath
is there any of finding out information about my granddad peter Jackson I was told he was I C A volunteer .his address at that time was 40 Augustine street
is there any photographs of ica members
This might be the same person
Peter Jackson
