Interesting banner from the PAOK fans in Tallaght Stadium earlier on tonight for the Europa League clash with Shamrock Rovers. The IMF isn’t too popular in Greece at the moment for obvious reasons. It’s unfortunate to note the fascistic imagery below the banner, in the form of the SS skull, but sadly that’s the case with football in many parts of Europe today.
The banner was clearly visible on television during periods of the match. I was passing through the city at 10pm or so and saw huge crowds of PAOK fans. To think they tell us there isn’t two fivers left in all of Greece!
I dunno if the imagery is ‘fascistic’ to be fair. PAOK are left-oriented apparently, according to what they told us.
They held up banners with socialist-type stars at the game too. And one saying ‘steal from the rich, give to the poor’. They stole a Rovers falg to prove this wasn’t all talk.
Mental f*ckers without a doubt though. Loudest away fans in Tallaght (Pats and Bohs fans take note!)
That particular skull is commonly used by fascists on terraces, but yep John there’s truth in your post. PAOK have both left and right wing support, remarkably.
Which Rovers flag was robbed?
One of a friend of mine who very stupidly hung it beside the PAOK fans.
It’s a simple tricolour with ‘Shamrock Rovers’ on it. You’d have seen it lots of times over the years but might not have noticed it.
Not quite sure what to make of Greek fan culture though. Good singing and all but kinda weird. At several points in the game they all took off their shirts and starting beating the crap out of each other (mosh style). Odd I thought.
Have to agree with John , the Loudest away fans I’ve seen in Tallaght too. It wasn’t just the noise but also the ‘choreography’ (if that’s the right word) of the fans was fantastic. Some of it looked quite complex .
Seemed a decent enough bunch too from the ones I talked to.
It is the SS Totenkopf – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:3rd_SS_Division_Logo.svg – about as fascistic as you could possibly get. What that necessarily says about the particular group of football fans I wouldn’t know though, but for that matter being against the IMF, rich people etc.. by no means precludes you from the far-right.
Some what disturbing if true.
The Nazis murdered over 60,000 Jews in Thessalonika, virtually wiping out the largest Sephardic community in Europe.

But I mean after the Rovers game in WHL. There were people claiming we’d been singing anti-semetic songs which was completely untrue.
