There’s a deadly short cut from Hanover Quay over Camden Lock down in Grand Canal Square. It takes you over three lock gates with a view of the O2 and up along the bank of the Dodder to the bridge at Ringsend. Wear a life jacket if you’re coming from the pub.
Oh, that one is deadly alright! I also love the one in Smithfield from the square through the Jameson distillery, round a copper pot before leaving you on Bow St. Have to say, love this series on lanes:-)
Another one of my favourites, though it might not qualify, is from Liffey street through Arnotts past the wan’s on the make up counters and into Henry street. Running the gauntlet of perfume samples makes it a really nice smelling short cut.
There was another one that brought you from the lane beside the Duke in Duke street into Grafton street but I think that’s gone.
Ha! It’s a short cut, it definitely counts. Much warmer in there too.
Another really good one is from South William St to Grafton st. through the car park, with all the latests models. Up to the top floor of the multi story and across the glass sided bridge across Chatham St with views of Conns camera shop and Powerscourt. Then down through Brown Thomas past all the luxury goods and out past the top hatted doorman. It’s the scenic route..
I love that house at the end of Phibsborough Avenue. Discovering it was a real surprise. Another good quick route in Phibsborough is Devery’s lane. It is apparently the only place in Dublin that was named after a living person.
I can tell ya that Devery’s Lane was named after a Mr. Devery who used to own a tiny shop at the end of the lane, selling bread and milk and paraffin. I used to go there as a small child during the early 70s when I’d get sent to the shop for stuff all the time. It would have been the early 70s and the man was ancient by then 🙂 But yeah, Mr. Devery was very much alive then and it was named Devery’s Lane then.
