Where Were You?, the magnificent 304 full colour photo book on Dublin’s youth culture and street fashion published late last year, will be back in the shops on Thursday, April 12.
The first run sold out within weeks, so you’re advised to pre-order with Garry on the website here.
In the latest issue of History Ireland, Cllr. Cieran Perry wrote a fantastic review of the book which touched on issues of class and racism in Dublin’s 1970s punk and skinhead scenes.
Last October, I had the opportunity to interview the book’s editor Garry O’Neill which resulted in articles in Rabble (Issue 2) and Look Left (Vol. 2, No.8).
Excellent stuff. I’m ordering a copy right away.
Nov 1976. Them were the days. Flares, leather jacket and platform shoes from Justin Lord in Temple Bar and get yer photo taken by yer man in O’Connell street..
Was Justin Lord not on South King Street? Don’t think there were any trendy shops in Temple Bar in 1976.
I think he started off in Sth King St and moved to Temple Bar. I know for a fact I bought a pair of brown platforms with stars on the toes in Temple bar just off the quays. It stands out in my memory because he employed a very well endowed pretty female shop assistant. This was in the days before wimmin’ could nip out and buy super sized thruppeny-bits on their lunch hour..
Justin Lord was my dad believe it or not, he had another shop in the dandelion called the western boot company, and several other shops across Dublin at the time. Great memories for me and lovely to see his shoes being remembered. Thank you.
You won’t see this one in the book. It’s a photo of a disco dancing competition around the late 70’s

Does any one know how to contact (Tony) Justin Lord former owner of a trendy shops in Temple Bar in 1976 in Dublin. I’m a friend of his who has lost contact with him years ago
There’s a Facebook group called ‘1960s and 1970s in Dublin’. I think that would be your best bet.

Hi Loveday Onwuka
So nice that you are remembering my Dad Tony (Justin Lord) sadly he died in 1994.
It makes me happy and proud that some people are still talking about his shoes. He really was ahead of his time.
Michelle
I have a photo of me wearing a pair of the platform shoes I bought from him.
