This fantastic image above was posted to archiseek earlier, one of a series of images from the Dublin Civic Trust from their proposals for a restored and rejuvenated Thomas Street. There are further images in the series which can be seen over on the archiseek website.
The Dublin Civic Trust report on Thomas Street, compiled for Dublin City Council, is available to read in full here.
Better than the skyscraper complex that was planned; at least the recession did one good thing, eh? Shame they can’t re-open the Brewery Hostel as a library, Thomas St. library was fantastic in its heyday.
I grew up on Thomas Street. We have put a value on our rural heritage superior to our urban heritage. If I hear another person from the country say……. such a place is the heart of Ireland.. Thomas St is one of the most ancient and historical places in Ireland. All sorts of events happened there. What is now St Catherine’s Church was the ancient monastery of St Thomas at the dissolution of the monasteries in the 15th century these land were given to the Church of Ireland and still belong to the C of I parish. Lord Edward Fitzgerald was arrested in Thomas St. Robert Emmet’s Rebellion began in Thomas St and he was beheaded outside St Catherine’s Church. The 1916 rebels marched up Thomas St to Richmond Barracks (my father saw them). In any other European country a street such as this would be a national monument but we have no value on our urban heritage. Ireland has many hearts and Thomas St is one of them. Will post shortly some 1890’s pics of the street just have to get them on to my PC.
Brilliant, would love to see them.
Meaning to do a post on the historic plaques in the area, plenty within spitting distance of the brewery. Incredible corner of Dublin. My grandmother lived in Cornmarket (above the Penny Bank!) so the area fascinates me.
Would love to see these pics. Eugene Coyne on facebook if u can post them to me.
An indication of how long the running down has been going on: The windows of one of the abandoned shops still displays advertisemtns for jeans with prices given in £.

i was born not far from Thomas St, (Ross Rd) and it was always part of my Childhood, in later years, i worked in Thomas St, ((John Power Distillery).. We still visit, every Sat, and our relations do the same. It would be a shame, to destroy the Nature of Thomas Street, It would be a Treasure to restore it.
i was born on lr bridge street, could anyone tell me was there a maypole dairy in the thomas street area in the 50s or early 60s or am i just remembering wrong
thanks
frank
Frank,
You’re remembering just right. Though it’s long before my time (I grew up on Thirlestane Terrace in the 80s) my mother grew up there too and remembers the Maypole. It was up just past the junction with Meath Street beside the pub I remember as Bakers.
The area’s changed so much since the 80s, never mind since the 60s.
thanks damien,i was beginning to doubt myself
