Released this month, 30 years ago. Described as the only song ever written in Ireland about the Leaving Cert.
The single was recorded at Lombard Sound Studios, produced by Liam Hurley, engineered by Philip Begley and released on Libra Records.
The Alsations (c1979 – 1986) were a seven piece Dublin Pub Rock band who released three singles and gigged extensively during their seven year career.
“…an education and and a license to drive…”played on the latter end of Pat James Rock Show.the only alternative to Fanning. They had an instrumental called “Suicide”,which wasn’t half bad in a Dexy’s vein
!
That’s actually a pretty good tune. The 175 in the lyrics is a number that can be made up by adding 150 and 25. I love those sort interesting facts.
The “175” was actually a motorbike (a Yamaha DT175). I wrote the song after I overheard the best chat-up line of all time at a party in Glasnevin…. ” I got 5 honours in me leavin’ and I drive a DT 175″.
I remember the Honda 175 was metallic blue but the Yammy I can’t picture at all. Good song though.
You’ld never know what you’ld learn on the internet 🙂

Brilliant song, I thought it was a honda 175 (noddy) which I had. Did’nt have the 5 honours but what a great band, fond memories.
Christ – howya Philip (aka the perfectionist) !!

Yes; The Alsatians– I saw them in Kevin St Tec circa 79/80. Funny–I had 5 hons L.C. and a DT 175……but I always thought the song was about the Blue Honda 175.[ Farmers bike if they didn’t have a ’50 or Hilman Hunter.] -I don’t recall going to any parties in Glasnevin–but then again maybe I was !!!. Bit of a mad time…everyone was always skint. There were gigs too in Bolton St Tec. Day Time…weird no smoke or beer…..and being Kevin St/ Bolton St female audience members were a very rare sight…The DT was converted into a kit of drums and a few support gigs in McGonagles, Ivy Rooms, Crofton, Maggot Bin, The Summit Inn and school halls…..So Long Ago.
