A fascinating and well-made three and a half minute mini-doc focusing on the history of the Irish LGBT community in film and TV. It wad directed and produced by Anna Rodgers for the GAZE Dublin International LGBT Film Festival which takes place between the 2nd and 6th of August.
Some interesting screengrabs:
0:40 in. Shows ‘Union of School Students’ (USS), Workers Solidarity Movement (WSM) and the Irish Republican Socialist Party (IRSP) marching on a Gay Liberation (?) protest.
0:44 in. Front of the Dublin Gay & Lesbian Pride March ’92
1:14 in. Nora Bennis “The fabric of our society is disintegrating”
I wonder if the first photo is from 1983, when there was a march from Fairview in protest at the suspended sentence given to the killers of Declan Flynn. (At the recent conference of the European Gay Police Association in Dublin Castle, the speaker from the Equality Authority noted that one of them did later go to jail, for robbery.)
Yes, the march heading northwards along the North Strand Road was the one in protest at the suspended sentences given to all involved in Declan Flynn’s murder. Even though one of the gang admitted to “about 20” other “queer bashing” attacks, Judge Gannon didn’t think killing gays merited a prison sentence.
If my memory serves me right, there were about 600-800 on that march, with banners from gay groups, a few trade unions and a few anarchist & socialist groups.
Its actually Nora Bennis from limerick. Another fruit and nut job if my memory serves me correct.
Cheers, wasn’t sure. Thanks.
Isn’t that Nora Bennis, rather than Una Bean?
Yep, you’re right. Cheers!
