Some nice photographs here from Paul Reynolds, who attended last nights Setanta Cup clash between Glentoran and Saint Patrick’s Athletic in Inchicore.
A 0-0 draw, the game was much better than the scoreline suggests. Setanta Cup games are always marked out by a serious police presence, and the seizure of a four-season old Palmerstown Saints flag (presumably for having well-known Pats fanatic Ernesto Che Guevara on it) was a bit of a pity. Such is life.
Nice pix. The garda presence was fairly unbelievable though. Reckon the PSNI will put on a similar show in the Oval next Monday?
Striking display of Lippisanzers, long time since I have seen anything like it. I predict thatThe Oval will be guarded by a ring of OAPs in various states of decreptitude as the Club cannot afford to pay its players, let alone the Light Brigade. as a salt-and-pepper Dublin based Glenman, that was an interesting night out. Cheers.
Pats fans on tour next Monday might be interested to hear the story of how Glentoran came to nick their green, red and black livery from a Dublin touring side called Na Shulers:
Glentoran colours are special, chosen at a gathering in the Hatfield Bar on the Ormeau Road in late summer 1882; they were taken from the colours of the blazers of Phoenix Cricket Club in Dublin who were in Belfast as part of the Na Shulers touring side. Na Shulers or “The Rovers” were a combination XI of cricketers from Dublin who travelled to Belfast and Ballywalter Park (amongst other venues across Ireland) on a regular basis to participate in matches against teams from the North. The red, green and black of the Phoenix blazers caught the eye and the imagination of our fledgling side. Glentoran registered those three playing colours and so the story began.

Even allowing for it being a Setanta Cup night that was an extraordinary turn-out from the Garda. The odd thing thing about it was that there was so (comparatively) few of them inside the ground.
It made me laugh to see when all the shouty Glens were giving it loads down near the front, one of the young ones who had also made the trip came down a few rows and stood beside them cos the light was better there, got out her compact and started doing her make up.
