Here’s some screen grabs from a home video made by two Jewish brothers of their trip to Dublin City in 1956. It’s just over ten minutes long and has only received 16 views (at the time of writing) since January.
Introduction to the video.
The view looking up O’Connell Street.
A glimpse of the Busáras bus station, opened only the year before.
Teaser for the night time escapades.
The two brothers on O’Connell Street, about to climb Nelson’s Pillar.
A nice find, but why do you write ‘Jewish brorthers’? Do you mean they are/were American Jews? Why should their religious background matter?
Religous background doesn’t “matter” Suisaidh, I think it’s just good to give some background information on those involved. Unfortunately the video description doesn’t give much in this regard except for names. We’ve always done our best to cover as much Dublin-Jewish history as we can on this site.
I’ve mailed the uploader to confirm but I think it’s an Irish guy showing around two American bothers.
Thanks for your reply. Just found it odd you mentioned their religion instead of where they were visiting from.
Dublin’s gay scene apparently involved the Paradiso (Westmoreland st) and the 4 Provinces.
Intriguing vid. I’m aghast that we routinely locked wild animals up in those small cages until not so long back.
FXR I don’t imagine the ‘gay night life’ as per the neon sign had that connotation in 1956 – though you of course may be right about the Paradiso etc. I’m well impressed with the profusion of neon in what was a fairly depressed era.
