Sweeney Todd’s was a unisex hairdresser based over Dunnes Stores at 10 Exchequer Street, just off South Great George’s Street and opposite the Central Hotel.
It did a wash and shave for men and women for £3
It was known for playing ska, punk and RnB over its soundsystem and was popular with a lot of Dublin’s music and left-wing radical crowd.
Their phone number was ‘771265’. There may have been some connection with Lillians Hairstylists, at Johnsons Court off Grafton St, as they used the same number in the late 1960s/early 1970s.
Sweeney Todd’s was certainly open up until at least 1984.
Anyone have any memories of it?
Not sure if Shay Murphy (below) frequented Sweeney Todd’s but thought it was suitable enough to post in the article. Many thanks to Mick Healy for passing on these three scanned images.
That was my Da’s old salon. I’ve only pretty vague memories of the place as I was very young.
As well as Dave Fanning, I think (not 100%) Gerry Ryan used to go there. I’ll double check that though.
Barry, do you mean your dad used to go there or that he ran the place? All the best.
He ran it. Sorry, that should have been clearer.
Sam, Sweeney Todd’s hairdresser moved to 10 Exchequer St, from Johnston’s Court off Grafton in 1978. Their phone number was ’771265′. same as Lillian,s Hairdressers because Sweeney Todd’s took over Lillian’s in 75.
Lillian Wright was a sister of the late Billy Wright (former OIRA) shot dead in his hairdressing shop on the Cabra Rd by the Official IRA 19-10-75.
As well as Dave Fanning and Gerry Ryan there was David Norris,Roger Cole,Gabriel Byrne, Lou Macari (Man U) and Kieran Nugent the first blanket man in the H-blocks who dropped in after his release.
Fascinating, thanks
In Liffey street upper in the 70’s there was a barber whose name was (ah think) Todd Fletcher. He was nicknamed Sweeney Todd as well. It’s where we got our first skinheads.
my mam and I went there. A guy called Michael Healy owned and ran it. He spoke with a very soft English accent
