Jesus is coming, look busy.

Ah, the things people hand you in town.

Keep the day free.

The day Jesus comes back is on a Saturday, and the day after a Dublin derby with the Saints and Bohs playing in Dalyer. It’s also the weekend of ‘The Adventure Weekend’ at the RDS which promises “world
class live demonstrations.”

Interesting….

Once a month, myself and jaycarax head to The Workman’s Club and spin some tunes. Skaturday is a tribute to the music we love, and while ska is obviously central to proceedings, the broader family tree gets a look in too. Reggae, dancehall, soul, punk and more besides features.

Drop in Saturday night and say hello. The Workman’s Club is located right next to The Clarence, and the ska is upstairs.

Mod Fest April 2011

What better way to kick off the Post Xmas postings than with a post on Mod Fest, which is without a doubt going to be one of the most anticipated events of 2011. Jointly organised by Sean Fletcher and Modern Media, the two nights of cracking music is a steal for €49.50.

I’ve previously written a piece about the history of the Mod scene in Dublin, you can read it here.

Here are the 2011 League of Ireland fixtures, just published today.

The first week will see two Dublin sides away outside the capital (the Saints in Galway and Bohs in Bray), Rovers at home to Dundalk and a Dublin derby (pfft!) between Sporting Fingal and the Belfielders.

Excellent. Get the calendar out.

New Years Eve 2010

The Warehouse Collective will be throwing their third, and most likely best, warehouse party this New Years Eve.

It’s definitely not one to be missed.

The first one was quite an experience. There’s something altogether exciting about getting a bus at 2am from the quays to a yet undisclosed location somewhere in the city. A smug feeling goes with it, knowing that your joining the party at the same time bouncers are throwing people out in the clubs around the city. Thanks be to god Dubliners now have options to party hard and late.

Hardliners may turn their noses up but until people start ‘letting themselves into’ empty buildings, we should be pretty grateful that people are putting the time and effort into organising these kind of warehouse parties.

Facebook event here. You can buy tickets here.

We’ve heard Ciaran Murphy has had to pull out but it’s going to be a cracker of a gig regardless.

Queue outside a Bank of Ireland branch in Dublin, last night. By Superscouse , from boards.ie

I don’t know whether its a coincidence or not, but yesterday, the day that Eric Cantona had encouraged French people to withdraw all their cash from their accounts en- masse, Bank of Irelands systems went “tits up” and started spewing out huge amounts of cash. Bank balances were not being updated so people with nothing in their accounts were able to withdraw hundreds of euro. Queues grew at ATMs as rumours spread, people withdrawing thousands at a time and all the rest. Now don’t get me wrong, I’ve no sympathy for the banks; I’ve heard of one person who is leaving these shores for Australia in a couple of days withdrawing over a grand, good luck to them getting that back. Its going to be a joyous Christmas for some people, lets hope the banks don’t catch up with them in the New Year!

Thanks to William for this great snap.

Merrion Row might have a better idea what Rossport looks like after the student demonstrations of last month, but this image from Dame Street is excellent. Right above Lapello’s lap dancing club images of Rossport are screened out to the public. How surreal.

It is the trailer for new and acclaimed documentary ‘The Pipe’, which is being shown just around the corner at the IFI.

Get along to support it. Here is a peek at the trailer for you.

Check out this call for a mass snowball fight in Herbert Park this Saturday on Facebook. “Forget about the bailout, the IMF, Fianna Fail and the weather…even for just an hour! Seize on this opportunity to have some free fun. Afterall, it’s the simple things in life that put smiles on our faces! Choose your side before you arrive- dress in spots or stripes!”

Snowball Fight! By Maheraja, from Flickr

Nice idea, it has 520 people down as attending, if 100 of those show up, I’d still be impressed. I’d like to say I hope they get the weather for it but I’m not sure I do at this stage!

Damien Dempsey, Colony

"Greed is the knife and the scars run deep." Print from the recent Maser/ Damo collaboration at today's demo, as spotted by Comrade O'Carroll

Whilst the lyrics of the Damien Dempsey’s “Colony” refer to imperialist colonisers like England, Portugal and Spain, the above lyrics may just as well refer to our own dear leaders. Poisonous and clueless shower the lot of them.

With one third of CHTM nursing a bad headache from his birthday last night whilst on a plane to the Basque country for some football tourism, it was up to the remaining two thirds to take to the streets today, alongside an estimated 100,000 others. Irish media are using a figure of 50, 000 but I defy that, the ICTU demo last year had 120, 000 and this certainly came close to that. From my viewpoint, it took approximately an hour for the march to stream past before I joined in the left block towards the back. Impressive showing it has to be said. Lets get the same outside the Dáil on budget day.

(kudos to http://www.aaocarroll.org for the pic!)
