Television Rocker

The Radiators from Space, in my opinion, are up there with The Blades and The Atrix as being one of the best bands ever to come out of this city. Their two albums TV Tube Heart (1977) and Ghost town (1979) are played at least once a week on my Ipod, laptop or CD player.

I was lucky enough to catch them supporting The Pogues in The Point in December 2006. The internet has been awash with excitement ever since Mr. Chevron announced back in August that a new Radiators “album and an accompanying television film” were in the pipeline.

Anyway, earlier in the week I had an epiphany. While humming the (classic) opening chords of The Radiators from Space’s first single Television Screen, I soon found myself singing the chorus of Nut Rocker, the 1962 instrumental from B. Bumble and the Stingers.

I think they share a pretty similar tune. What do you think?

I’m talking about the score at 0:23.

The Radiators’ intro is faster and rougher (and has no piano)  but is essentially the same tune? Perhaps Chevron and the boys were more influenced by rock n roll than I thought originally?

Once a month, myself and jaycarax head to The Workman’s Club and spin some tunes. Skaturday is a tribute to the music we love, and while ska is obviously central to proceedings, the broader family tree gets a look in too. Reggae, dancehall, soul, punk and more besides features.

Drop in Saturday night and say hello. The Workman’s Club is located right next to The Clarence, and the ska is upstairs.

Mod Fest April 2011

What better way to kick off the Post Xmas postings than with a post on Mod Fest, which is without a doubt going to be one of the most anticipated events of 2011. Jointly organised by Sean Fletcher and Modern Media, the two nights of cracking music is a steal for €49.50.

I’ve previously written a piece about the history of the Mod scene in Dublin, you can read it here.

New Years Eve 2010

The Warehouse Collective will be throwing their third, and most likely best, warehouse party this New Years Eve.

It’s definitely not one to be missed.

The first one was quite an experience. There’s something altogether exciting about getting a bus at 2am from the quays to a yet undisclosed location somewhere in the city. A smug feeling goes with it, knowing that your joining the party at the same time bouncers are throwing people out in the clubs around the city. Thanks be to god Dubliners now have options to party hard and late.

Hardliners may turn their noses up but until people start ‘letting themselves into’ empty buildings, we should be pretty grateful that people are putting the time and effort into organising these kind of warehouse parties.

Facebook event here. You can buy tickets here.

So long 2010.

ADW- 'The Blues Brothers'.

What a year it has been.

When we marked our one year anniversary, back in November, I commented that “It’s been an infuriating few months. Dublin, in some ways, has taken a serious fall from grace.”

An infuriating few months indeed. Since November, things have gone from bad to dismal one could say. 2010 won’t make a particularly good episode of Reeling In The Years, but it did still present a few memorable moments (for the right reasons).

Firstly, this. That fall took place on January 8 2010, with Ireland (and more importantly Dublin) grabbing one of the first internet virals of the year.

There were a few bizarre stories, not least during the summer when a penguin was removed from Dublin Zoo. The July robbery produced my favourite line of the year from The Irish Times:

In what was a rare case of reality mimicking advertising, gardaí picked up a penguin yesterday after a feather-brained trio stole the bird from Dublin Zoo.

If every year is remembered by a defining image, what will mark the front of the 2010 folder? Fairly obvious I’d think. I’d propose Louise Minihan for Dubliner of the year on the back of that one.

Despite not having a clue about the X Factor or any of that lark, it was genuinely excellent to see Ballyfermot mother Mary Byrne do so well on the UK talent show. My childhood memories of Ballyfermot involve kerbs painted green, white and orange for Jackies Army, and Mary’s homecoming was nothing if not spectacular.

Dublin Stevedores Limited, a family business with roots in Dublin port going back over 200 years, have redesigned a crane in memory of folk singer Ronnie Drew (1934 – 2008).

They say that the lakes of Killarney are fair
That no stream like the Liffey can ever compare,
If its water you want, you’ll find nothing more rare
Than the stuff they make down by the ocean.

One of the best Irish pop singles ever.

There should be a law to force 2FM to play this at least once everyday.

Not only is it catchy as hell but it has an obvious social message. Rare enough for the time.

Autobop won the rock section of the 1980 City of Dublin Music Festival. In 1981, they had a Sunday night residency in The Ivy Rooms (now Fibbers) on Parnell Street. They split, I believe, in 1983.

Anyone have a copy of their six track demo tape that they’d care to digitize?
Anyone have a spare copy of their single which they’d like to give a good home?
Anyone have any contact details for any of the band members?

Last Saturday night, I played ‘Advertising’ at The Workman’s Club to a packed room of people in their 20s and 30s. It got more people nodding their head than most of the other ‘well-known’ tracks I played. It is true. Great songs never age.

The band that keeps on giving. Twenty five years after recorded, a single from The Blades sees the light of day.

Building A Wasteland edit radio01-1 by Reekus Records

‘Building A Wasteland’ was recorded in 1985 by The Blades but was never released. The single was mastered in 2010 and an extended version will be available on a Reekus compilation of the early years which I believe is due out soon.

I’ve already written about The Blades twice on the blog. Check out Revelations (Of 45s) & The Blades Are Sharp.

Buy The Blades two album boxset, Those Were The Days, here at the Reekus Records website.

Thumped’s effort for the Christmas No. 1. Good luck lads. Christmastime In Dublin Town is available to buy from iTunes for 99c right now. Money raised from sales will be donated to a Wet Hostel in Dublin city centre.

Initiated as an experiment in collaboratively creating a killer pop tune for Christmas by Thumped member Shneaky 6pack, this thing sprouted legs and is now hurtling up the iTunes Irish Pop chart. Board members each wrote a line, with each having seen only the preceding line, and when 12 lines were written… well, listen for yourself..

The level of solidarity this project has inspired amongst the members of Irelands most significant fully Independent music website has been staggering ,with people from all corners and genres getting involved to try put the kibosh on the usual muck we are forcefed annually at this time of year.

So, this song might well be muck too – but it’s the PEOPLES muck!

Death to the record Industry… LONG LIVE MUSIC! (oh and MERRY FUCKING CHRISTMAS)

Love, Shneaky 6Pack & the Christmastime in Dublin Town Gang!
